Purpose: In order to effectively educate medical students who can practice as a medical doctor in the 21C, we proposed educational goals and items of biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB), based on the paradigm shift of medical practices, and accompanied by progression of biomedical sciences.
Methods: To understand the present status of medical education of BMB-related subjects in the 41 Korean medical colleges, the Educational Committee of KSMBMB posed questionnaires to the medical schools. The state of medical education in the 70 American medical schools and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) was also evaluated by internet search, focused on the curriculum and the assigned hours for BMB-related subjects. The Committee also prepared learning objectives of BMB-related subjects.
Results: New learning objectives determined by the Committee of KSMBMB comprised 32 chapters with 342 items, which were proposed as the essential items to be learned by medical students in the 21 century. The objectives include new knowledge to practice and apply the tools of molecular medicine, which will be prevailing in medicine.
Conclusion: The Educational Committee of KSMBMB suggested new learning objectives of BMB-related subjects, which might be essential for medical students who want to be a medical leader in the sphere of biotechnology as well as medicine.
